Tigers One Step Closer After Another Impressive Win
The Welland 91.7 Giant FM/Country 89 Tigers continued their amazing team play on day one at the Northumberland Silver Stick Regionals with a 4-1 victory over the Clarington Toros in minor peewee A pool play.
The team jumped into the lead only 48 seconds into the game when Julian Belcastro lit the lamp on nice feed from Tanner Cutler. 4:17 of the second period was "Miller Time" as Miller Miotto continued his excellent play of late by converting a Colby Franchetti assist into a two-goal advantage. Welland would stretch the lead to three when Cutler ripped a shot top-side after connecting with a Chace Buti feed with just over a minute left to play in the second period.
Clarington would get one back when Maddox Dwyer scored from Jacob Pennington and Davis Gorham seventy-eight seconds into the third period but Franchetti would close out things by scoring with just over five minutes left to play in the game after an outstanding selfless assist from Mason Risto.
Both wins today were fantastic examples of a team playing as one as all fifteen skaters in the lineup can take pride in their individual contributions that are simply too numerous to mention here, these were truly "team wins". The coaches' player of the game award had several honourable mentions and truly could have gone to anyone in uniform today but it was bestowed on Colby Franchetti for his excellent playmaking and on-ice leadership.
The Tigers powerplay was 1-for-5 while penalty-killing was perfect, defending both penalties they were assessed.
Welland wraps up round-robin action tomorrow at 8am in Port Hope at the Jack Burger Sports Complex against the Russell Warriors who were 0-1-1 on Friday after tying the host Northumberland Nighthawks and losing to the talented Quinte-West Hawks squad.
