Tigers Roar Into Semis
The Welland 91.7 Giant FM/Country 89 Tigers roared into the Semifinals with a 3-0 win over the Burlington Jr. Cougars on Saturday night at the Boston Pizza Cup.
Carson McComber got the visitors on the scoreboard quickly by depositing a Mason Risto pass into the net only forty-two seconds after the opening draw. Jared Duerden would double the Tigers advantage with a goal from Colby Franchetti with a minute remaining in the second and then the two would combine to set up Tanner Cutler's blast that capped off the offense with forty-five seconds left in the period.
Welland played a very solid two-way game to skate to a dominant win, keeping the Jr. Cougars to only eight shots on goal, all of which were stopped by Braxton Fleguel who picked up his second tournament shutout of the season and third overall.
Welland's penalty-killing was much improved in their fourth game of the weekend as they successfully defended ten minutes of infractions however their powerplay faltered going 0-for-5.
Player of the Game honours went to Hudson Kipp who has been one of the team's stalwart defensive players all weekend.
Welland squares off against the Owen Sound Attack, whom they tied 3-3 earlier in the day, in Sunday's final four while the St. Thomas Stars and St. Clair Shores Saints battle it out in Sunday's other Semifinal game. Those two teams skated to a scoreless tie on Saturday evening's final round-robin contest.
