Grimsby Takes Home The Crown, But The Tigers Play Like Kings
The
Welland Niagara Street Pharmacy Tigers earned their stripes this
weekend in Orillia taking home the Finalist medals at the Jim Wilson
Chevrolet Winter Classic.
Welland, who opened with a 9-5 preliminary loss against the hometown Orillia Terriers, blanked the CW Fusion 1-0 in their next game thanks to a goal from Kaleb Séguin and a shutout performance from Logan Pachkowski.
The Tigers then outlasted the Innisfil Winterhawks 6-5 to move on to a semi-final rematch with Orillia. Scoring for Welland against Innisfil were Carter Kipp, Nicolas DiPietro and Simon Guglielmi with two each. Mark Gibson netted a pair against Orillia with Carter Risto, Kipp and Séguin adding singles.
Welland nearly shutout the Terriers in the Semi-final round rematch, winning 3-1 on goals from Mitchell Tomaino, DiPietro and Nolan Hemauer.
The Championship game certainly lived up to the tournament's billing as a classic as Niagara rivals Grimsby and Welland kept the raucous crowd on the edge of their seats throughout. At the end of regulation both teams were tied 2-2 and immediately went into a shootout to decide the Champion. Grimsby scored on their first two chances and Welland's Carter Kipp was the only one who answered back as Grimsby took the Championship with a 3-2 victory. Mitchell Tomaino recorded both Welland goals in regulation.
