Welland Captures The Caledonia Challenge Cup
The Welland Niagara Street Pharmacy Tigers quieted the Thunder and withstood the Tornadoes to capture the Caledonia Challenge Cup this weekend.

Rain was in the forecast all weekend, but it was sunny skies for your Welland Niagara Street Pharmacy Tigers as they skated past Mooretown, Caledonia and Tillsonburg to their first tournament win of the season.

Welland opened their tournament with a 4-1 win over Mooretown thanks to a pair of goals from Carter Kipp and singles from Simon Guglielmi and Mitchell Tomaino.

Tillsonburg would prevail 7-3 in the second round-robin game as Guglielmi, Nicolas DiPietro and Mark Gibson provided Welland's scoring.

Stanley Mannell would backstop the Tigers to a 1-0 shutout victory over Caledonia in their final preliminary game with DiPietro providing the lone goal of the game.

A thrilling semi-final saw the Tigers outlast Mooretown through 36 minutes of regulation, a five-minute 4-on-4 overtime period and a shootout. Kaleb Séguin and Carter Kipp would score in regulation and Guglielmi and Kipp would score in the shootout to secure the Tigers a berth in the Championship Game while Logan Pachkowski stood tall in the Tigers net.

A total team defensive effort in the final was largely able to stymie the high-powered Tillsonburg offence and hand that team their first loss of the tournament and season. Tomaino with a pair and Isaac Khan and Guglielmi with one each propelled the Tigers to victory in a 4-2 conquest.

Welland returns to league play tonight to face the undefeated Grimsby Peach Kings at 6:50pm in Welland's home-opener.
