Tigers Capture Caledonia Challenge Cup Crown
The Welland Telus major peewee A Tigers captured the Caledonia Challenge Cup Peewee Championship with a 4-1 record this past weekend.
Jordan Raso recorded the lone Welland goal as the team fell to the Parry Sound Shamrocks 2-1 in Friday's opening game.
The Tigers rebounded with a 3-2 win over the Hespeler Shamrocks on day two with Sean Sinclair, Ryan Reeves and Noah Bovine providing the offense. Dayton Flatt, Sam McPhee, Raso and Bovine each found the mesh as Gavin Beck backstopped the Tigers to a 4-0 shutout victory over the Huntsville Otters Saturday afternoon to move into Saturday night's Semifinals.
Tyler Ray and Bovine recorded goals as Welland won the rematch over Parry Sound 2-1 to advance to the Championship game.
Jaxon Vanderlip and Bovine scored in Welland's 2-1 victory over Niagara-on-the-Lake in Sunday's final. Dylan Pace answered back for the Wolves. Bovine was awarded Welland's Player of the Tournament honour based on his strong performance all weekend but it was a complete team effort that allowed the team to capture its first ever tournament title on Canadian soil.
The Tigers return to league play with a full slate of games this weekend. Welland hosts Stoney Creek on Friday at 7pm, travels to St. Catharines at 6pm on Saturday and finishes up in Niagara Falls at 5:45pm on Sunday.
