Tigers Win Peter Mancuso Tournament in Shootout
The Welland Mike Knapp Novice 'A' Tigers captured their second tournament of the year by beating the Amhurstburg Stars in the Championship Final.

The Tigers opened the Tournament with 3 wins in the round robin play. The Tigers beat The Burlington Jr Cougars 13-0, TNT Tornados 8-0 and the Willowdale Blackhawks 4-1.

The Tigers beat a strong Whitby Wildcat team in the Semi-Finals 4-1, advancing to the finals against Amhurstburg.

The final game was decided in a Shootout after both teams skated to a 1-1 draw after regulation and OT. The Tigers won the shootout 3-1, taking home the tournament Championship.



In the opening game of the tournament, the Tigers dominated offensively.  All 3 lines for the Tigers contributed to the dominant 13-0 victory of the Burlington Jr Cougars.

Later that day, the Tigers faced the TNT Tornados. The game started out slow, but the Tigers picked up the pace mid way through the game and started to find the back of the net. The Tigers sent several shots at the opposing net and managed to skate away with a 8-0 victory.

In the third round robin game the Tigers faced the Willowdale Blackhawks. Both teams were 2-0 to start the tournament, and this game was to decide who would advance out of their division to the semi finals. This game was a back a forth affair. Both teams utilized their speed to generate several good scoring chances at both ends. The Tigers managed to jump out to and early lead, and followed it up with early goals in the second and third periods. The Tigers played strong defensively in the third to preserve a 4-1 lead, and the win.

The Tigers advanced to play a strong Whitby Wildcats team in the semi-finals. During this game the Tigers came out strong an carried the play early. The Tigers managed to get on the board first, in the 1st period. The Tigers followed their 1-0 lead up in the second period with 2 more unanswered goals to take a 3-0 lead into the third period. Once again the Tigers played great defensively in the third period and limited the Whitby chances. Both teams traded goals in the third period and the Tigers advanced to the finals with a 4-1 win.

The Championship game was decided in dramatic fashion. The Tigers came out strong and spent most of the first period on  the Amhurstburg end, throwing several shots at the net, but couldn't put one past the goaltender. Amhurstburg jumped out to a first period lead, after capitalizing on a breakaway mid way through the period. The Tigers continued to dominate in the second period once again out-shooting and out-chancing the other team. The Tigers finally drew the game even with a goal late in the second period.
The third period once again saw several chances at both ends, and teams began to transition to defensive modes, in order to prevent a goal against. After the final buzzer went the game was still tied 1-1.

The teams played a 5 minute 4 on 4 overtime which saw little chances at either end. After a tiring overtime period the game still remained tied and was decided with a shootout.

The Tigers were successful on 3 of their first 4 shots in the shootout, while Welland goal tending stopped 3 of 4 Amhurstburg attempts, giving the Tigers a dramatic 3-1 shootout victory and the Peter Mancuso Tournament Championship.

The coaches are extremely proud of the effort of all 17 players throughout the tournament. It took a total team effort, in the end the Tigers managed to come together as a team and bring home their second tournament title of the season.
