The Stars Come Out In St. Thomas
The stars nearly aligned for a huge upset, but the Welland 91.7 Giant FM/Country 89 Tigers still managed to battle to an improbable tie against the top-ranked St. Thomas Stars in Friday night action at the Boston Pizza Cup.
Colby Franchetti recorded both goals as Welland jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first two periods of play. The Tigers were dominant during the first 22 minutes of play with relentless checking that stymied the St. Thomas attack.
However, St. Thomas would finally break through and score three unanswered goals in the final period of play, one at even-strength, one via the power-play and one while four-on-four to take the lead with 6:30 left. The Tigers would benefit from a powerplay with 1:40 remaining and Franchetti would capitalize with the game-tying goal to complete his hat-trick performance with nineteen seconds left in regulation.
While all players stepped up their game tonight one special mention goes to Tyler Laszlo who put in his best performance of the season to date where his speed was a huge factor in the Tigers ability to disrupt the Stars and cause chaos.
Welland faces 7th-ranked Owen Sound, who is 2-0 after a pair of 2-0 wins on Friday, at 1:30pm on Saturday and finishes round-robin play against the Burlington Jr. Cougars at 5:45pm.
