Welland Completes Sweep Against Pelham in Battle of Rice Road Season Series
The Welland Telus Tigers extended their undefeated streak in regular season play to 11 games by completing the season series sweep against Pelham in the third edition of the Battle of Rice Road, beating them 6-1 in Welland in Wednesday night's Niagara District Peewee Doherty action.
Nicolas DiPietro scored the lone goal of the first period only two minutes and ten seconds following the opening faceoff after being sprung on a breakaway by a great pass off the stick of Tyler Rowland.
Welland would break things open in the second period with DiPietro scoring twice more, converting passes from Mitchell Tomaino past Panthers starting netminder Boh Hunchak. Carter Kipp also collected an assist on the Tigers third goal. Mason Saxton, making his first appearance of the season as an affiliated player for the Tigers, would account for the fourth goal of the home side with Quinten Hemauer picking up the helper and Rowland would score his fifth of the season from DiPietro and Kipp to make it 5-1 before the middle period ended.
Pelham would break up Bryson Farr's shutout bid six minutes into the second period on a goal from Ian McQueen, with Maxx Veld and Justin Narvaez picking up the apples.
Tomaino would add one more to the scoreheet with Welland's sixth goal with just under fourteen minutes left to play in the final frame after being set up by DiPietro and Kipp.
Welland, now 11-2-4 in league play, will square off on the road against the Stoney Creek Warriors (12-2-2) on Friday night at 7pm. Both teams currently share the division lead with 26 points, however Stoney Creek has one game in hand on the Tigers.
