Tigers Extend Undefeated Streak To Sixteen Games, Earn Trip To International Silver Stick Finals in Sarnia
Submitted By Marty Ptoulx on Monday, December 31, 2018
The undefeated streak for the Welland Niagara Street Pharmacy/Gene's Skate Sharpening Tigers stretched to sixteen games as they compiled a 4-0-2 record during the Pelham Regional Silver Stick Championships and captured the berth into the International Silver Stick Finals held January 18-20 in Sarnia, ON with a 5-2 win over Tillsonburg on Saturday afternoon.

Matteo Mete, Julian Belcastro, Tanner Cutler and Carter Kelly each scored as Welland doubled up the Blades in the opening contest on Thursday. Ty Fielding and Lucas Ivezich replied for Lincoln.

In the second game of opening day, Welland came just under four minutes shy from shutting out the powerful St. Mary's Rock team that has only lost three regular season and one tournament game all season. Both teams received goals from players wearing the number 10 jersey as Julian Belcastro tallied for Welland and Jared Ballantyne netted the equalizer for the Rock.

Friday's action saw the Tigers tie Niagara Falls 2-2 in their final round-robin game with Hudson Kipp and Colby Franchetti scoring for Welland and Luke Pybus and Lucas Dilibero replying for the Flyers. The Tigers would defeat Pelham in the quarter-final match 8-1 on the strength of three goals from Julian Belcastro, two from Carson McComber and singles from Brennen Hagar, Carter Kelly and Townes Bestward. Kian Oelofse accounted for the Panthers lone tally.

Belcastro would net two more against St. Mary's in the Semi-final with Jordan Wright accounting for the other Welland goal in the 3-2 victory and Welland would get goals from Kipp, McComber, Belcastro, Cutler and Hagar in the 5-2 deciding game against the Tornadoes.
