Blackhawks Downed By Tigers
The Welland Niagara Street Pharmacy/Gene's Skate Sharpening Tigers skated to their tenth regular season victory and a share of first place with a 3-1 win over the Thorold Blackhawks in the lone Niagara District Atom Doherty game on the schedule Monday evening.
Tanner Cutler scored twice and Mason Risto chipped in with the other tally for the home side as the Tigers picked up their fourth consecutive win in league play to pull into a three-way tie for first place with Grimsby and Niagara-on-the-Lake who have played more games to date.
A much better effort in the defensive zone and a fabulous game in net from Evan Corriveau were the keys to the victory. Cutler opened the scoring in the first period at regular strength and then scored his second of the game while on the powerplay in the third period. Thorold would not go quietly with Brayden Steele cutting the Tigers lead to one with 7:30 left to play but Risto would net the insurance marker with two minutes remaining to claim the two points.
Welland, now 10-2-3, travels to Niagara Falls on Sunday afternoon to battle the 3-6-4 Flyers at 4:30pm.
