Tigers Claw Back To Tie Niagara-on-the-Lake
The Welland Niagara Street Pharmacy/Gene's Skate Sharpening Tigers scored twice in the last 3:28 of the game to earn a 3-3 tie with the Niagara-on-the-Lake Wolves on Tuesday night in Virgil.
Marco Angelini, for the Wolves and Tanner Cutler for the Tigers traded first period goals but it was Niagara that would score the next two. Mason Neal would score the only goal of the middle frame and Ethan Abraham put the hosts up 3-1 six minutes into the third before Welland staged their late rally.
Julian Belcastro pulled the Tigers within one with a beautiful short-handed marker with 3:28 to play and Colby Franchetti would net the equalizer with only 1:08 remaining. The Tigers appeared to score a go-ahead goal late in the period but the game officials ruled that the puck had not fully crossed the line and the game ended in a tie.
The Tigers, now 2-1-1 in league play, will compete in the Caledonia Challenge Cup starting on Friday with two games, a 10:30am contest against Strathroy and a 2pm matchup with Simcoe. On Saturday Welland will face off against Waterford at 9am.
