Hello Team 2

Our first game is Saturday, Oct. 15 at 10:20 in the main arena.  This will most likely be our slotted "home game ice."  The schedule is up on the WMHA website and can be found here.  If you would like to subscribe to the calendar with a calendar app on your phone (gmail or iphone etc) you can use this link here.  I strongly recommend that you subscribe to the calendar! If you print the calendar and there are any changes (which always happens throughout the year) you won't see the change on your print out.  If anyone needs some help with subscribing please don't hesitate to see me and I'll set it up for you if you'd like (I really don't mind :)  You can also setup text messages for schedule changes, game scores, team events and news posted to the team home page by going here.  Select your carrier (Bell, Rogers etc. and then select the teams that you would like to be updated on.  (We're Peewee LL2) but if you have other children playing in WMHA you can subscribe to texts messages for their team updates as well. - Pretty handy!

Our team page can be found here and I will try to keep it updated throughout the year and I will also email communications to the team as well.  Again if you have any email addresses that you would like added to the team communications please let me know and I'll add them to the group.

Parent Reps

We will need two parent rep volunteers if you are interested please let me know!  (Melissa Gomm has done a great job in the past and is interested again this year.) These are critical positions to the team but generally aren't too much of a time commitment.

The position of the reps are in place for a few "main" reasons:

  • Team money - All funds that are raised through fundraising or other donations are handled by the parent reps.  Coaches will not handle or make decisions in regards to team funds.
  • Fundraising - Parent reps will help organize any fundraising events we decide to do as a team.
  • Coach "liaison" - In any situation where parents have any issues or complaints in regards to the coaches a verbal "report" should be brought forward to one or both of the reps.  In general we ask that a twenty-four hour "cool down" period be observed before bringing a complaint forward.  Often, issues that may seem to be substantial in the heat of the moment may not seem to be as big of an issue after twenty-four hours.  I would still encourage all parents with any issues big or small bring them forward so we can speak about them and ensure that smaller issues don't grow to big ones.

Tournaments:

We generally end up playing in three tournaments and this can be discussed with the parent reps once we've established who they are.  Normally we play in the Niagara Falls Christmas tournament, the Ernie Clayton (Welland) tournament - I'm told that this touney is mandatory for all WMHA Peewee teams.  And finally we like to have one "away" tournament toward the end of the year.

Parent Meeting:

I would like to have a short team meeting on Saturday after the game.  If you could set aside 10 or 15 minutes so that we can go over a few things and ensure that everyone is on the same page.  I can answer any questions you may have etc.  Hopefully I will be able to announce and introduce the parent reps by this time as well :)

Coaching Staff:

As noted above if there are any "complaints" or issues we would ask that you take twentyfour hours to cool off before submitting a complaint regarding the staff.  However all of the staff are very open to speaking with the parents and are all very approachable.  Please come and see us anytime about anything!  I would remind you that we are just fathers of some of the kids on the team.  We're not professional coaches nor are we professional hockey players - we're volunteers and we all love coaching hockey.  We are all in agreement of our three main goals for the kids.

  1. Fun - this is always our first goal and first priority with each of the boys - always!
  2. Skill Development - Our second goal is to push and challenge the kids to become better hockey players and teammates.
  3. Winning - Of course we never walk into a game hoping that we lose, or try not to win.  Having said that we don't try to win at all costs either.  On occasion, such as a tourney or playoffs we will ask the kids if they would like to "shorten the bench" toward the end of the game in order to hang on to a win, take a shot at tying up a game or getting a goal to break a tie.  We will only do this on rare occasions in the few remaining minutes of the third period and only with the kids permission.  All regular season games will be fair play and fair ice time for everyone.  Like I said we don't try to win every game at any cost - but we will be as competitive as possible by setting the kids up for success and being as competitive as we can as a team.

Music & Team Name:

I normally bring in a speaker to listen to some "pump-up" music I asked the kids today if they would like to suggest some songs that would be appropriate.  If you'd like to email me some of their suggestions I'll do my best to find the songs.  Last year one of the kids brought their own music and the team prefered to listen to his music over mine which is also fine.  The only thing that I ask is that there is no excessive explicit or foul language or topics in the music.  I also let the boys know that we'd come up with a team name, we can also do this after the game on Saturday.  I normally let each child submit a name that they like and then we vote on them.

Trainer Warm Up & Game Times

As a team we would like to run some short "dry land" warm up drills with the boys.  This enables us to go into the first period already warm and ready for the intense activity.  This is known to help reduce injuries.  We would ask that the kids be in the dressing room forty- fortyfive minutes before game time.  We would like them to get their "bottom half" dressed then we will do the warm up.  The kids will go back into the room, finished getting dressed and then in the ten minutes before game time the coaches will have our "chalk talk" we will go over the game strategies and game plan for that game.  We would ask that all parents please leave the room for this team discussion so that the kids are focused on the coaches.  We would also ask that the first 5 minutes after a game be left to the team without parents in the room.  This also enables the coaches to address any issues or observations from the game and will allow the kids to focus on the coaching staff without mom or dad in the room.

Medical Information Sheet
In order for us as a coaching staff to ensure the safety of your son we ask that you complete the online medical information sheet which can be filled out here.  This information will be kept confidential, but it is necessary for the staff to ensure we are aware of any conditions or medical issues for your son.

Attendance

We would greatly appreciate it if you could let us know if your son is unable to make a practice or a game or if you're going to be late (with as much notice as possible).  This really helps us as a staff when creating lineups for games and preparing our practice plans.

Captain and Alternate Captains

We will be assigning a "C and A's" for the team.  The coaches will nominate and vote on the captains, we've had the kids vote on teammates in the past and found that it was really just a popularity contest and ended up with kids that weren't necessarily the best picks for those leadership positions.  As a staff we nominate the kids that we feel show traits of dedication, leadership, sportsmanship and are good teammates, they are not chosen based on skill level at all.
