Welland Mike Knapp Novice Tigers Crowned Champs in Grimsby
The Welland Novice A Tigers opened up their season with hard work, balanced scoring, and great team defense to win all 4 games and be crowned champions at the Grimsby Early Bird Classic.
Game one vs. Halton Hills was a tight battle until midway through the second when the Tigers found the net twice within a minute span as goals by Colby F. and Lucas B. put Welland in front by 2 heading into the third. Welland gave up a shorthanded goal early in the third then took over the rest of the period by scoring 3 more goals one each from from Tanner C., Jared D., and Max R. The defense took over and gave Halton Hills very little room as they prevailed 5-1.
Later in the afternoon Welland faced off vs. Brampton and came out flying as they poured on pressure all game long. Welland got two goals apiece from Colby F., Tanner C,, and Leo S. Chipping in with singles were Carson M, Brennan H, and Lucas B. Again The Tigers played great defense and held Brampton to very few scoring chances.
In the semi-game Welland squared off against Oakville and played their best game of the tournament. Moving the puck with perfection and continuing their non-stop puck pressure Welland struck early and often in defeating the Rangers 11-0. All 3 lines scored at least 3 goals paced by Leo S. and his hat trick. Tanner C. and Lucas B. found the net twice while Colby F. scored for the third consecutive game, Other goal scorers for the Tigers were Brennan H, Jared D., and Max R. Both goalies, Evan C. and Hayden D. took part and shared in the shutout.
On Sunday afternoon, Welland squared off against the hometown Grimsby Peach Kings in the final. Carson M. score a minute and a half into the game to give Welland the lead. Over the next 30 minutes both teams battled hard with the Tiger defense of Hudson K., Jared D., Carson C., Denton H., Ashlyn A., and Jonah B., holding the fort and keeping Grimbsy away from the net and limiting their chances. Finally Tanner C., gave Welland some insurance with just over 4 minutes to play in the game and Welland Mike Knapp ford Tigers prevailed 2-0. It was an excellent game and we look forward to more league games with the hard working Grimsby squad.
The whole weekend was a great team effort and a great way to kick of the 2016-17 for the Mike Knapp Ford Novice A Tigers. The coaching staff was extremely proud of the commitment to defense and the unselfish play shown throughout the 4 game weekend on the way to the championship.
